Ongoing Series

Short Film
Under 40 pages
Page Count
85–115 pages
Under 80 reads underdeveloped. Over 120 is a red flag unless you're established.
25–45 per episode
Half-hour drama runs shorter. Each episode needs its own contained arc.
Pilot: 45–60 pages
Pitch with the pilot only. The bible shows the season — not another script.
10–39 pages
Festival sweet spot is 10–20. Under 5 is a mood piece, not a short.

Structure

Three-act. Midpoint at page 55–60. All four quadrants must be present in the script.

Each episode: contained A-story + series-level B-story threading through. Finale resolves the central question.

Pilot establishes world, ensemble, and weekly engine. The pilot has to work alone.

One idea, linear time, must resolve. A short without an ending is a scene, not a film.

Buyer Type

Studio, production company, streaming (prestige), or indie financier. Know which before you pitch — the package differs for each.

Streaming (Netflix, Max, Hulu, Peacock, Apple). Cable is increasingly limited-only. Know the platform's tone before targeting.

Broadcast networks, cable (FX, AMC), or broad-appeal streaming. Not prestige streaming — that's limited territory.

Festivals, branded content, or self-produced proof of concept. Not a buyer pitch — it's a calling card.

Timeline

6–18 months from first pitch to option. Indie features can move in 3–6 months with the right package.

12–24 months from pitch to greenlight. The bible is what slows most creators — build it before you pitch.

18–36 months. Network development is the slowest pipeline. Premium cable/streaming is faster with the right attachment.

Self-determined. Festival submission windows are 6–8 months after production. Budget for a 6-month post window.

Cooper™ Says
The most common feature mistake: pitching without a one-pager. The script is what you leave — the one-pager is what gets you in.
A limited without a full episode breakdown isn't a pitch — it's a concept. The breakdown is what tells the buyer you can sustain it.
Most ongoing pilots fail because the writer wrote an episode, not a pilot. A pilot's job is to prove the show can run 100 episodes.
A short is not a lesser feature — it's a proof of voice. The question it answers: can this person make something that feels inevitable?
